Need in Deed at the Carnegie Foundation Summit on Improvement in Education

Need in Deed was honored to present a poster session, "Advancing Equity at the Classroom Level," at the recent Carnegie Foundation Summit on Improvement in Education in San Diego, CA. Click on the image below for a closer look at our poster.  The Summit focused on Improvement Science, showcasing efforts of educators working to improve education systems. Our team networked with educators from across the country and the world, learning about various network models -- their successes, and challenges -- and the common goal for us all to keep working toward high quality, meaningful experiences for students.  It was inspiring and challenging and we will incorporate our learning into our work.

It is one of our favorite times of year, as classes finalize their social issues for the balance of the school year. The learning journey so far has covered exploration of community assets and concerns, meaningful discussions among students about what they care about, and visits with community partners (local experts on the issues) to learn more. The issues that students are choosing reflect the current concerns of our society.  With gun violence, racism and environmental concerns the most frequently named issues so far this year, we are grateful for teachers who are making space in their classrooms to help students engage with these challenging topics and learn about the work in the community to address these issues.  Before the year is over, students will have designed and carried out meaningful service projects to contribute to the collective solutions. This process reinforces their identity as citizens, critical thinkers, and problem solvers.  Their classrooms become spaces where their ideas and concerns are valued.
